The Judgement of Paris, engraving, 11 7/16 in x 17 3/16 in, Metropolitan Museum of Art Marcantonio Raimondi was an Italian engraver who lived c. 1480- c. 1534. He is known as a pioneer of printmaking and reproductive prints of famous paintings at the time. He has no known surviving original paintings and only a few remaining drawings. He was trained in Bologna, Italy by Francesco Raibolini, who was a goldsmith and painter. Many of his early engravings focused on scenes from scripture and mythology, and he was greatly influenced by Dürer. Later, he began to make copies of woodcuts, which was unique for his time because most engravers copied other expensive engravings rather than cheaper woodcuts. In 1510, he moved to Rome and joined Raphael's circle. At this time, most of his work was either influenced by or copied from Raphael, even after Raphael's death in 1520. In 1524, he was put in jail by Pope Clement VII for some controversial work, but he was released soon after. In 1527, he was forced to flee during the Sack of Rome. After this time, little is known about his life until his death in 1534. The Judgement of Paris is one of Raimondi's early works from his time in Rome, done somewhere between 1510 and 1520. It is a composition created by Raphael specifically for Raimondi to engrave, rather than a copy from a painting. The scene shows the event that started the Trojan War, when Paris was forced to choose which goddess he thought was most beautiful. Dancing Girl Seen From the Back.
