Lindsay Arnold's work addresses female identity and the role of women/expectations for women in society. Coach Hall suggested that I research her because her work contains similar ideas to what I am trying to convey in my work. Some of her work, especially her series "Tedium" which is a collection of paintings of doilies, is about how objects hold different meanings and can represent different experiences or memories. This is similar to the content of some of my pieces, which are about memory and how memories/experiences are recorded. I like her work because it shows how a deeper content can be incorporated into paintings of objects. My main goal for my art right now is to try and think of deeper and more challenging ideas to incorporate into my work to make it more interesting and powerful. This piece is about the Syrian refugee crisis. Something that I admire about this work and Ai Weiwei's work in general is that it has a powerful message and addresses important societal issues. His work represents the "art takes courage" idea because it often deals with controversial topics, such as the refugee crisis. I would like to incorporate more challenging content into my work and try and be more daring because I do not really think that the art I am making currently takes a lot of courage, because it does not really deal with difficult or controversial topics, it is more surface level.
This September I went to Philadelphia to tour the University of Pennsylvania. While I was there, I visited the Institute of Contemporary Art at the university. There were two exhibitions up: Speech/Acts and Nathalie Du Pasquier, BIG OBJECTS NOT ALWAYS SILENT. Speech/Acts explores the experiences of black Americans and how social and cultural aspects of language influences their experiences. The Nathalie Du Pasquier exhibit is a retrospective of her work since the 1980s. Something I found interesting about the two exhibitions was how immersive they were. They filled the space that they were in, so that you viewed the art all around you rather than just in front of you. I do not think that these will really impact my work that much because they are very different from the type of work that I want to do. However, one thing I can take from Speech/Acts is the use of text in art, which I have already done a little bit through my use of newspaper, but I might try to incorporate more meaningful text. One thing I liked about Nathalie Du Pasquier's work is her still lifes, which were slightly abstracted in color and perspective.
